RCVS ‘Under-Care’ Guideline changes 1st September 2023
The RCVS, a governing body of all veterinary surgeons in the UK, provide a form of quality assurance for those who entrust their animals into the care of veterinary surgeons. All veterinary surgeons wishing to practise in the UK must be registered members and follow the ‘Code of Professional Conduct’ produced by the RCVS.
The RCVS have made some changes to the ‘Code of Professional Conduct’ which come into force on the 1st September 2023.
The Changes
Under Care
Code of Professional Conduct
The recent change made to the ‘Code of Professional Conduct’ 1st September by the RCVS, is called, ‘under-care’ and the guidelines involve the prescribing of medications. The “under-care” guidelines, covers all medications but mainly affects antimicrobials (antibiotics), antiparasitic (flea and worm treatments) and controlled medications. This means we may have to see your pet for a check up before prescribing medication.
For this reason, you may be asked to bring your pet in more regularly for check-ups. In most cases an annual check at your pet’s vaccination should be adequate for flea, tick and worm treatment.
For other medications such as antibiotics and controlled medications, even if they have been previously prescribed may still need to have a consultation. If our team ask you to bring your pet for a consultation before any further medication can be prescribed, please be understanding.
Further details can be found on the RCVS website or if you would prefer, you can speak to the vet the next time you are in. We advise that you continue to place your order for flea, tick and worm treatment as you normally would, if we do need to see your pet for a check up we will contact you to book an appointment.
